Journalists, Activists, and Dead Man's Switches: A Sober Guide

A dead man's switch will not protect you, and the movie version is a myth. What a switch really does for journalists and activists, and how to set one up.

The dead man's switch has a movie reputation: the file that keeps its owner safe because everyone knows it will publish if anything happens. For journalists and activists asking whether they need one, start here: the movie version is mostly myth, and building your plan around it is a mistake. What a switch really offers is narrower and still worth having: continuity. If you are detained, hospitalized, or worse, the material you were carrying and the context only you hold reach the people who can act on them.

Here is the sober version of what to build and what not to expect.

What a switch is not

It is not protection. The deterrence story assumes an adversary who knows the switch exists, believes it will fire, and cares about the disclosure more than about you. All three assumptions fail often. Treat a switch as insurance for your work, never as a substitute for physical safety planning, legal support, or the protocols press-freedom organizations publish for hostile environments.

It is not a leak platform. A switch that dumps raw, unredacted material to the open internet can endanger sources, colleagues, and subjects long after it fires, in exactly the circumstances where nobody is left to fix the mistake. Responsible design releases to people, not to the void: an editor, a lawyer, a trusted colleague who can judge what to do with full context.

It is not set-and-forget. A switch is a live commitment to keep checking in. Configured casually, it becomes either a false-alarm generator or a dead account that fires a year of silence after you changed phones.

What it genuinely does

A working switch answers one question: if you go silent, does the story die with you? For an investigative reporter, that might mean an encrypted archive and a memo of what is confirmed versus suspected, released to an editor. For an activist, contact trees and documentation reaching a named successor. For a fixer or freelancer, the simple fact of who you were meeting and where, reaching someone who will make noise quickly.

Two design choices carry most of the weight.

The check-in interval is a real trade-off. A short interval (days) means fast response when something is wrong and more false alarms when something is not; a long interval (weeks) means fewer false alarms and a slower fuse than a detention scenario wants. There is no universally right answer. Match the interval to your current risk: tighten it during a dangerous assignment, relax it at home, and prefer a tool that makes that adjustment trivial.

, and they bite harder here because the material is sensitive. The design worth aiming for tries you on more than one channel, waits out a grace period before deciding your silence is real, and then reaches your contacts in an order you set rather than all at once.

That is the model Aegis DMS implements in its hosted mode: an ordered contact cascade, notification over email and Telegram, a retry pass for deliveries that fail on the first attempt, and a grace period before anything is released. Two things it does not do, because saying so is more useful to you than a clean pitch: there is no separate human verifier role that gets asked "is this real?" before the cascade proceeds, and the payload is not tiered so that the most sensitive material lands last. If your plan depends on either of those, build them into who you nominate and what you stage, rather than into an assumption about the tool.

If you would rather not trust a vendor

That instinct is legitimate, and for some readers of this piece a self-hosted or fully offline arrangement with a lawyer is the right answer.

is open source and self-hostable, and the code being readable is the point.

One thing to understand before you choose it. A purely local deployment, with no relay or hosted service behind it, has no automated release: if your own server goes offline, nothing fires. Self-hosting buys you verifiability and removes a vendor from your threat model. It does not, on its own, buy you the delivery half of the problem, and the delivery half is the one that decides whether your plan works on the day.

The hosted service is a separate product from Core, and its code is not public. Treat them as two different answers to two different questions.

Practical notes that save regret later

Keep the payload current; an out-of-date switch delivers stale context with full confidence. Encrypt sensitive archives and deliver keys separately from ciphertext, ideally through different stages. Tell your recipients they are recipients, and agree on what they should do on release day, because a surprise delivery of explosive material to an unprepared person is a plan for paralysis. Rehearse the false-alarm path once: miss a check-in on purpose and watch what happens, before reality runs the test for you.

A last caution about expectations. No service in this category can promise the message arrives. Delivery depends on the address still being valid, the mail not being blocked, the recipient opening it, and the service being up. Design as though one of those will fail, because over enough years one of them will.

And keep perspective. Most careers never need the switch to fire. The point of building one calmly, in an ordinary week, is that it removes a specific fear quietly and permanently: the fear that your silence would be the end of the work. That is a reasonable thing to want handled, and it is handleable.
